Bad news from Vermont

I came off the trail Monday (7/20) with a very sore ankle. I checked in to a hotel, planning to take a couple of days off to rest the ankle. Tuesday, when I got up I was hardly able to walk on it. I got a ride to the post office and then had the driver drop me off at an urgent care facility. They were not much help since there was no X-ray machine. The PA felt like it was just a sprain and sent me on my way. I knew I needed a few more days to rest and was able to move from the hotel to a hostel, which saved me about $80 a day., I arrived at the hostel Thursday and was hoping to be able to hike out Monday.

Monday came and the ankle was no better. I made plans to go to the ER on Tuesday. The X-rays revealed a broken bone in my heel area. The doctor said there is a stress fracture across the back of my heel that eventually caused the broken bone. My hike was done.

I am very disappointed that I cannot continue on my adventure. I appreciate all of you who followed me on this journey. I hope to start a new adventure sometime in the future but for now I will be working on getting back home. I am looking forward to seeing my wife and the rest of the family. Thanks again for the encouragement and well wishes that I received during my adventure.

I’m so sorry Uncle Chuck. Prayers for a speedy recovery and the ability to get back out there when you are ready! Needing to stop because of an injury does not diminish what you accomplished, 600+ miles is remarkable, then add a broken bone, you are one strong man!!! Love from Calvin, Heather and Sophie
